Through software they came up with, they were able to quite easily eavesdrop, manipulate SMS messages, and even compromise LAN security. Then they set out to figure out a way to stop people from doing those very things. That work led directly to RFinity.

Work originally began in the person-to-person and person-to-vendor sales space by way of mobile applications that route transactions through RFinity’s own secure servers. But now that NFC appears ready, RFinity is making sure they’re ready for it. The idea is that their technology could cut out the middle man here: themselves.

Obviously, the company isn’t going to share all the details on how they secure NFC transfers. But the basic overview is that they verify an incoming NFC signal and ask for a user’s permission before taking any action. Further, if the action is a transaction, it requires a PIN, just as you might do an ATM withdrawal. That’s all pretty standard. But the key is one-time-use transaction codes that RFinity creates on the fly along with complex cryptographic signatures. These ensure that an transaction is secure since it means that every transaction can only happen once. Even if those numbers were intercepted by a hacker, they would be useless beyond the one-time payment.

And even if your phone is lost or stolen, a thief couldn’t do anything without your PIN. And you can remotely shut down your NFC capabilities via RFinity. It’s enough to make me wish I could throw out all my credit cards right now. “Today’s identification and transaction systems are based on what? A magnetic strip on the back of a card, based on a 1950’s technology that relies on a base station to read the information embedded as a series of simple magnetic markers in plastic tape,” writes Josh Jones-Dilworth, who is working with the company to bring them to market.

Again, NFC as a technology is great and potentially game-changing. But the software is still needed to make it actually work. And some of the big guys began realizing that early on as companies like PayPal, Bank of America, and even Subway have been testing out different things with RFinity for some time. In fact, RFinity has actually been doing field tests of the software end of their technology since 2009 in places like Idaho, well before most people in the U.S. had ever thought about NFC.

But now people are starting to care. And soon, they could be caring a lot more. NFC is already built-in to Google’s new Nexus S device — and the company has put out a call for developers to start using the tech. Rumors have the next iteration of the iPhone gaining the technology as well. In other words, I suspect we may be seeing acquisition rumors starting to fly around RFinity in about six months or so. Provided their technology proves up to the NFC challenge, of course.

Even though unions have made clear that their fight is not about their wages or benefits (they’ve offered concessions), they’ve made the fight all about their “right to be unionized” and the fictitious right to “collective bargaining”—which makes their cause even more despotic.

In making Madison into something reminiscent of the spectacle of the 1960s, unions, Democrats and their liberal cohorts are attempting to make the Wisconsin union battle into a civil rights battle, when it is not. In fact, the Wisconsin fight, when compared to private-sector negotiations is about: 1) the Scope of Bargaining, 2) Union “Income” Security [Right-to-Work vs. Forced Dues], 3) whether Wisconsin should be the unions’ dues collection agency [payroll deduction of dues], and 4) whether public-sector unions should be ‘recertified’ by holding elections every year.

Contrary to the Left’s hyperbole, Scott Walker’s proposals do nothing to eliminate public-sector workers’ right to association, assemblage, or to petition their government. Even pretending that it is a “rights” issue is a mistake. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that requires a government to engage in a back and forth negotiation with a collective of workers. In a poignant piece entitled There is No Right to Collective Bargaining, Public Service Research Foundation President David Denholm summarizes the problem with the unions’ argument, stating:

A law granting public-sector unions monopoly bargaining privileges gives a union, a special interest group, two bites at the apple. First, it uses its political clout to elect public officials. Then it negotiates with the very same officials.

When you consider that between 70 and 80 percent of all local government expenditures are personnel costs, you begin to get an idea of the magnitude of the power such laws give unions.

Not only is there no right to collective bargaining in public employment, it is wrong. Collective bargaining distorts and corrupts democratic government.

Collective bargaining is a process for employer-employee relations that was designed for the private sector. This process served as the model for the development of public-sector collective bargaining without taking into account the fundamental differences between the two sectors.

As Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour explains:

“When they have collective bargaining in Wisconsin, on one side of the table there’s state employee unions or the local employee unions. On the other side of the table are politicians that they paid for the election of those politicians,” Barbour said. “Now, who represents the taxpayers in that negotiation? Well, actually, nobody.”

Even Newsweek’s Evan Thomas noted on Sunday [via Newsbusters]:

The Democrats really depend on these public employee unions in a lot of states for their support and for their political muscle, and public employee unions got a problem here. I want to distinguish between unions and public employee unions. Unions obviously are critical, but in the public sector, public employee unions have a pretty easy time getting a lot of benefits because nobody’s really pushing back all that hard.

Admittedly, Walker’s proposals are a threat to unions in several ways. As Walker’s proposals determine:

The extent of what unions will be allowed to bargain about. Walker’s proposal limits bargaining to wages only, effectively eliminating the WEA Trust monopoly which gets its money from local school boards and runs it through a union-run insurance company.

Whether unions can have workers fired for not paying union dues. According to its most recent financial record on file, WEAC (the teachers’ union) raked in over $25 million in 2009. Walker’s proposal makes paying union dues voluntary, as opposed to mandatory. This goes to the lifeblood of any union. If, for example, 20% of those teachers who are currently required to pay union dues as a condition of employment opt out, WEAC could lose up to $5 million a year in revenue. [It is noteworthy that, in the private-sector, the SEIU will be conducting its second strike at a Pennsylvania medical center over the issue of mandatory dues.]

Whether the state will continue being the unions’ dues collector. Walker’s proposal eliminates’ the employers’ payroll deduction of union dues. Again, while it is commonplace for unions to negotiate payroll deduction, there is nothing anywhere (in private or public sector law) that states that it is an employers’ duty to be a union’s collection agency.

Whether the unions will have to ‘re-certify’ every year to maintain representational status. Of all of Walker’s proposals, this seems to be one that could be considered a ‘throw away’ item in negotiations. If Walker’s other proposals get enacted, and union-represented employees feel that the union is worthless, they can initiate an election themselves every calendar under existing law [see Section 111.83(5)[h]] .

Given the ability of the unions and their co-conspirators on the Left to hijack the issue in Wisconsin over these last two weeks, there appears no way for a “win-win” compromise to be worked out. One side or the other will win. Either the unions and the Left, or taxpayers will prevail.

If the Left wins, all chances of reforming public-sector unions will be tossed aside by weak-kneed Republicans who will then be held hostage by temper-tantrum throwing Democrats (see Indiana for example). In addition, the Left has already painted the entire Republicans party with bulls eyes and has for years. Therefore, there is no reason for GOP governors like Scott Walker, Chris Christie and John Kasich to back down, which puts the Left in an untenable situation as well.

In the meantime, the disciples of Saul Alinsky will continue their prattle, attempting to convince America that the Battle of Wisconsin is something more than a fight over union power, politics and money…even though it’s not.

In particular, they agree that the central question afflicting pension plans is the returns they'll see in coming years. Barro argues that the commonly quoted figures "understate the cost of benefits to be paid in the future by counting on high investment returns that may not materialize," while Baker argues that the gigantic shortfalls that some observers are now estimating are overstated and that pension funds can "reasonably assume" returns in the 7 percent range. It's worth noting that before the financial crisis, Baker was trying to sound the alarm about pension funds using overly rosy estimations of future returns, so it's difficult to accuse him of being overly bullish. That said, read David Leonhardt making the case for more pessimism on future returns.

The major disagreement comes over the question of what to do next. Barro argues that existing pension promises should be honored. "Short of defaulting on these debts," he writes, "the only way states can eliminate unfunded pension liabilities is to fund them." But going forward, he'd like to see states move to 401(k)-style programs, as that protects taxpayers from having to shell out more cash during economic downturns. Under the current system, he says, "state governments are long in the stock market on taxpayers’ behalf."

Baker strongly disagrees. He argues that the point of an actor such as the state, at least when it comes to pension policy, is that it has a long time horizon and so can ignore cyclical ups and downs in the stock market. "In principle," he writes, "state and local governments will exist into perpetuity, so a period in which the market is depressed need not be of great consequence." Add in, as Teresa Ghilarducci does, that "401(k) management and investment fees are three times higher" than traditional pension plans and "professionals who manage money in pooled pension funds usually get higher returns than workers who manage their own 401(k) accounts," and it's hard to argue that defined benefit plans should be done away with for states, though it's not hard to argue that they should be funded honestly and based on realistic projections for eventual returns. Felix Salmon agrees.

But the bottom line is that the correct questions to ask about pension plans are: 1) Are they estimating a realistic rate of return going forward? 2) If so, are they sufficiently funded? And 3) If not, what should be done? I think there's less disagreement about the underlying nature of the problem here than some people might think. The disagreements, rather, are about the country's likely economic performance going forward (as that will ultimately decide returns) and what our state pension system should look like in general.

Making Money With Website

Facebook’s do-gooder application Causes is donating $10 to charity for every purchase from participating florists ahead of Valentines Day.

This campaign marks the first time Causes has tapped into retailing to raise money for charity, and it’s made possible through partnership with Trialpay and ProFlowers, among other florists.

When purchasing a bouquet from participating florists, you get to choose among five different charities to receive the $10 donation: Keep the Arts in Public Schools, Prem Rewat, National Parks Conservation, Invisible Children and Campaign for Cancer Prevention. The offer kicked in today and lasts until February 15.

We dig altruism and like the general idea but wish it were executed differently — like aiming for a different holiday, retail category and price point. Making the donation a flat $10, compared to the price of a bouquet seems a bit unweildy and — well, it’s steep and likely to get passed on to the buyer.

In what many people call a mixed economy, flowers are one of those categories that unfortunately might succumb to individuals’ budget cutting. Maybe that’s why the leading florist, FTD, which isn’t participating in the Causes.com project, is currently touting savings of up to 25 percent on its website, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

This is some shit Lea Michele's brain might burp up during award season when she's practicing her acceptance speech in the mirror while hugging the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony award reproductions she had made at the trophy store around the corner from her house. Deadline Hollywood says that Melissa Leo of The Fighter, who will be making out with an Oscar statue in a couple of Sundays, used her own money to place "For Your Consideration" ads in all the trade papers like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Melissa tried to keep shit classy by posing in a fur with the address of her website printed in small print in the corner. It sorts of looks like an ad for a fur company you might find in the back pages of a Las Vegas hotel magazine. But okay....

Some think this is a tacky ass move that screams "I've got a 9-inch erect ego," but Melissa tells Deadline that she really had no choice since no magazine would put her on their cover due to the fact that she's not a 20-something starlet. 50-year-old Melissa says that the media isn't even trying to look at her because she's older and not a box office star. Melissa breaks it down like this:

“I took matters into my own hands. I knew what I was doing and told my representation how earnest I was about this idea. I had never heard of any actor taking out an ad as themselves and I wanted to give it a shot.

I am quite certain I have not overstepped any boundaries of the Academy. I did hear a lot of very positive comments, particularly from women of a certain age who happen to act for a living and happen to understand full well the great dilemma and mystery of getting a cover of a magazine. I also heard there were negative comments, but no one said them to my face, sadly. I like to hear what people think. I could explain myself."

The ad on the left looks like it should also contain the words ".....donating your arms to this woman" because Melissa's only got fur stumps!

But sometimes you really have to grab the dick yourself and make shit happen, so I understand what she's saying. However, Melissa should've really just saved her money for AFTER she wins the Oscar for playing a graceful Irish rose. I mean, "SUCK ON THIS, AGEIST WHORES" ads would've been so much better.

Before you get into making money online, there are a few things you need to do in order to be prepared.

1.) Prepare to be in this for the long run!

Making money online takes more time than you think. You can't just hop on the computer and expect to get $100 in the mail the next day. You

can make $100 with GPT sites, but you'll end up spending $88 while you do it. There's always a catch- no matter what people say. So, make sure you plan out some time to fully dedicate yourself to making money.

2.) Never give out too much information.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't enter your real name. Avoid entering your actual address, phone number, and email. Instead, use an email address from email.bugmenot.com. It's free and extremely simple. You don't even need a password. Also, instead of using your phone number, get a Brring.com redirection service so you can make money while these internet services try to contact you. You'll get a dollar each time they try to call you. It works even if the company is a scam. Lastly, just make up a fake address. If companies want to send you money via check, you should always be able to change you address before cashing out.

3.) Use something to track your earning.

Whether it's a notebook, blog, or Microsoft Word document, you should always keep track of your online earnings.

4.) Don't spend any money!

I say this because before you know it, you would have spent more money than you earned online. Don't even put money into your PayPal account! But if you must, limit yourself. Deposit $10 each month into PayPal. Don't get carried away.

5.) Create an online desktop.

This is my favorite part (besides making the actual money!). I recommend mygoya.com as on online desktop. It makes it easier to track all of your online tools. And plus, if you're not always on the same computer, this allows you to store everything online instead of on a flash drive.
